Pteridium aquilinum (Dennstaedtiaceae), a Novel Hyperaccumulator Species of Hexavalent Chromium

چکیده

Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) is a highly toxic environmental pollutant produced as byproduct of stainless steel manufacture and leather tanning. Several vegetal Cr VI-accumulating species have been investigated in phytoremediation, promising technology to remove heavy metals from soils water bodies. The aim this work was test the sensitivity, accumulation remotion VI both life cycle phases fern Pteridium aquilinum. Both gametophytes sporophytes were obtained (in vitro) evaluated vitro using hydroponics) under controlled temperature, photoperiod humidity conditions. One-month exposed K2Cr2O7 (0, 50, 200, 600 800 µM). Four-month 800, 1600 6400 µM) hydroponic harvested at 24, 28, 72 168 h post-exposure, biomass, chlorophyll content (a b) amount tissues culture medium tested. results indicate that are not sensitive VI, since chlorosis reduction biomass observed. accumulated up 915 mg Cr×Kg−1 DW, while 11,854 Cr×kg−1 DW underground parts. showed higher uptake rhizomes adventitious roots, despite having low translocation index toward leaves, these reached high concentrations well (2240 DW). Given capacity sporophytes, places within top five with highest accumulation, it may be successfully used phytoremediation methods.

Chromium and nickel in Pteridium aquilinum from environments with various levels of these metals

Pteridium aquilinum is a ubiquitous species considered to be one of the plants most resistant to metals. This fern meets the demands for a good bioindicator to improve environmental control. Therefore, it was of interest to survey the accumulation of Cr and Ni in the rhizome and fronds of this species collected in Lower Silesia (SW Poland) of serpentinite rich in Cr and Ni and granite poor in t...

Isolation of an active glucoside in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum.

An active glucoside that enhanced release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells was isolated from a toxic fraction of bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum, by partition column chromatography on Sephadex G-25. It was a yellowish amorphous powder on freeze-drying, readily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether. It was hydrolysed with beta-glucosidase to release D-glucose. It was a...

Global chloroplast phylogeny and biogeography of bracken (Pteridium; Dennstaedtiaceae).

Bracken ferns (genus Pteridium) represent an ancient species complex with a natural worldwide distribution. Pteridium has historically been treated as comprising a single species, but recent treatments have recognized several related species. Phenotypic plasticity, geographically structured morphological variation, and geographically biased sampling have all contributed to taxonomic confusion i...

Biosorption of hexavalent chromium in a tannery industry wastewater using fungi species

The isolated fungi species of different kinds from chromium contaminated soil sites located in Nagalkeni, Chennai were used for reducing chromium(VI) in a tannery industry wastewater of Nagalkeni, Chennai.  The experiments were conducted to know biosorption potential of isolated fungi species for removing chromium(VI) in a tannery industry wastewater against the different pH, fungi biomass and ...

Carcinogenicity of hexavalent chromium.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a commonly used industrial metal, is a well known human lung carcinogen. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that the particulate Cr(VI) compounds, specifically the water insoluble compounds, are the more potent carcinogens; however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains unknown. Here we summarize recent Cr(VI)-induced human tumour, in vivo, cell culture and in vi...
